I Helped Build
An African School

Jun 09

Actually, with your help we can build TWO schools in July: 1 in Kenya, 1 in Ethiopia (and I’ll do a live videocast by satellite from the worksites, that everyone who donates can watch!)

We’ll raise this money together, $10 at a time.

ETHIOPIA

Meet Yawala, a teacher in the poor eastern village of Hruso, of the Somali tribe.

Yawala and her students currently don’t have a school building. We can change that this summer.

With a population of 1,800 the people of Hruso are not Somali pirates but Somali farmers. But in drought-ridden east Africa they’re struggling to grow enough food to feed their families.

Two of our Global Hope Network Int’l (GHNI) staff members, Amerga & Alex, have committed to helping Hruso. They began by coaching Hruso’s leaders with our method of Transformational Community Development, TCD: Helping villages transform in the five key areas of Water, Food, Wellness, Income Production & Education.

On the education side, Amerga & Alex inspired the village to leverage their meager resources to truly educate all their children.

What began was an “under the tree” school!

The community now collectively pays for two teachers GHNI helped them find. GHNI also supplied three notebooks for each child as well as blackboards and chalk. There were 20 students to start, and it’s already grown to over 60. The kids are learning so well that a local Somali sheik said, “I want to send my kids to your school… they truly LEARN there.”

They now need a building, and we can help!

In July volunteers will help build a school building with 4 classrooms for these dedicated teachers and kids. It will be built by purchasing local materials, using the local methods of logs and mud :), and we’ll hire local labor (jobs!) for our volunteers to work alongside. Plus, we’ll engineer it to withstand the strong east-African winds!

Your gift will make this possible.

KENYA

Meet Abdukadir and three of his students.

Abdukadir has become my pal! He is a teacher in the northern Kenyan village of Gambella. A year ago a number of Gambella’s children were also learning under a tree. But GHNI volunteers and others helped build school rooms, and now Gambllea has 200 children learning daily with a principal, vice-principal and 6 teachers!

But here’s a problem: Abdukadir and his fellow teachers make the 4-hour walk to the village every Monday to teach all week, and have no particular place to stay until they go home Friday.

So we’re going to help Gambella build its school some “teachers’ dorms.” And get this: the teachers decided to pay some small rent that will go into the village’s development fund!
